Atlas: 3 pp. text, 6 folding hand-colored lithographed maps. 55.5x35 cm (22x13¾"), early cloth-backed boards.About a third of the color plates depict Native Americans, including Aleutians, Cherokee, Mandan, Chinook, and, notably a scene of natives of San Francisco. According to the title-page there should be 36 colored and 4 plain steel engravings, though the plate count here corresponds to the contents leaf excepting one plate which was listed without page number. Some of the plates are after Catlin. With the uncommon atlas demonstrating the distribution of the various racial and ethnic groups throughout the world. The maps are of Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, and the Pacific Ocean.
Condition
Atlas binding heavily worn, some plates in text volume foxed but overall quite clean; atlas with gentle toning, occasional foxing, several closed tears; very good.
