Description: Unpaginated, approx. 100 pp. 16.3x10 cm (6½x4"), flexible red leather stamped "My Trip Abroad" in gilt.Well-written and very legible diary kept by a woman who might be named Beulah, traveling with her husband Dave. With preliminary printed matter regarding such useful information as foreign flags, values of foreign currency, the time mail takes from New York City to various foreign cities, time differences, details of ocean travel such as sounding apparatus and how to create a shuffleboard court on deck, etc. The captains of the outbound and inbound ships have signed the diary, as have some passengers, one with an inscription from which we learn the diarist's name. The trip took them across the U.S. to New York, then by ship to Le Havre, and on to Paris, Rome, Nice, Athens, Rhodes Island, Constantinople, Smirna, Cypress, B?µirut, Haifa, Palestine (22 pgs.), Bethlehem, Cairo, Egypt, Alexandria (26 pgs.), and more. Most of the time was spent in Turkey, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, and Syria. In Cyprus they "Came to anchor just at sunset, about 5:30. The island is huge with mountains rising to a height of 6,000 ft. ... We all went ashore in huge oriental looking sail boats there was almost no breeze to the sailors rowed.." In Beirut ("Beyrouth") they "went by auto to dog river saw there the names of conquerors such as Napoleon, Augustus Caesar, etc. carved in the granite. The ride was beautiful & the country is like biblical pictures, bannana (sic) trees in abundance lovely tall palm trees tall pine trees with the needles only at the top in a bunch stone houses of pink stone..." A compelling diary rich in descriptions.
