Description: 4 volumes. 524; 527; 534; 527 pp. Errata slip tipped in at rear of volume four. Three folding maps. (8vo) period half morocco and marbled boards. First Edition.Dwight's massive Travels, "written to record how New England appeared, or to my own eye would have appeared, eighty or a hundred years before, and to refute foreign misrepresentations of America," is one of the classics of early American travel literature. "It is an astonishingly varied collection of descriptions of natural scenery, agricultural, political, religious, and social conditions, including historical, biographical, and statistical information, and is interlarded with shrewd practical comments." - DAB. Author was president of Yale from 1795-1817. Sabin quotes the Quarterly Review as saying "This work...is the most important of Dr. Dwight's writings..." Howes D612. Sabin 21559. BAL 5075. Plum 328.
Condition
Moderate binding wear, sections of spine strips perished, some joints cracking but hinges reinforced, light toning and offsetting of text and maps, some foxing to outer leaves, owner signature to titles; good.
