First Edition,Oration given in the aftermath of the Louisiana Purchase by the Federalist Congressman from Massachusetts. While extolling the blessings of a free government, Taggart expresses discomfort with the nascent division between North and South that were already evident, and the enmity between party factions and the divisions between large and small states. He particularly deplores "the late enlargement of our territory, by the purchase and accession of Louisiana," whose inhabitants are "ignorant in the extreme, and born and educated in the habits of a despotic government..."
