John Genin (French/New Orleans, 1830-1895), "Portrait of Paul Henri Augustin Capdevielle (1880-1950) & Pierre Emmanuel 'Auguste' Capdevielle (1882-1940), Children of Paul Capedevielle, Former Mayor of New Orleans," ca. 1886-`1887, oil on canvas, signed lower right, presented in a period giltwood frame, H.- 50 in., W.- 36 in., Framed- H.- 61 in., W.- 46 1/4 in. Provenance: Descended in the Capdevielle Family through the sisters of the sitters, Edith (1886-1959) and Yvonne Capdevielle (1884-1960); to their niece through their youngest brother James J. Capdevielle (1889-1920).Note: Eldest two sons of Paul Capdevielle, 34rd Mayor of New Orleans (1843-1922) and his wife Marie Augustine 'Emma" Devesine Larue (1850-1917). Paul Jr. was an accountant and state auditor. Auguste married Susie Olga Dunbar in 1908 and was an executive for Southern Pacific Railways. Neither had children. Genin also executed two additional portraits of the younger Capdevielle daughters- Elina and Yvonne- both of which are conserved in the permanent collection of the Historic New Orleans Collection, # 2015.0254.1-2

In overall good restored condition. The painting has been relined with some buckling/bubbling between canvas layers to the top center right above the older boy's head. Under UV light, there is inpainting to the background behind the boys' heads and small inpainted "touch-ups" scattered throughout. The younger boy's face is intact, and the older boy's forehead and bridge of his nose has been lightly retouched. Under UV light, there are several layers of varnish that fluoresce green, making older repairs difficult to see. There is some light abrading to the top of the canvas edge due to friction from frame, and light craquelure throughout.
