Description
A sleeveless, gray/green denim, constructed jacket with a full zipper closure extending from the bottom to below the stand-up collar. A vertical row of three alloy snaps are to either side of the front above the large, elasticized pockets which correspond to two female snaps on the flap. To the unlined interior is a white tag that dates the smock to 1943, along with a broad arrow and the "Size 5" that fit a "Height 5'11" to 6'00" "Breast 38" to 43" and manufacture marked for "L. Wilberston." The interior is also stamped "W" broad arrow "D". Mint and nice! As a result of the German paratroopers’ successes early in the second world war, the British quickly organized an Airborne battalion in early 1941. These voluntary personnel were originally kitted out with a grey/green cotton duck smock patterned after the German paratroopers’ smocks, until late in 1941, when the camouflage "Denison" smock was introduced. The smock was intended to be worn over the battle dress, with any equipment to be worn on the exterior of the smock. Due to the success of the design, it was continued, with minor variations, into the post-war period. In 1942, a longer sleeveless, fully zippered jump jacket was worn under the parachute harness, but over all other items, including the Denison. It’s main purpose was to prevent equipment from being caught/snagged during a dump and discarded upon landing. The large, elasticized pockets allowed for grenades to be carried.
