Description
Two commemorative plates for the Olympic games held in Germany. The first is an attractive pewter plate, 5 in. dia., with the Olympic torch at the center in relief, the rings at the bottom, and a banner on either side of the torch with the dates ‘1936’ and ‘1972’. Further reads ‘Silvester 1972’ at the top and ‘Garmisch-P Munchen’ at the bottom. In excellent condition. The second plate is for the 1936 games and is of brass construction, 5 in. dia., and bears the Olympic bell with the German eagle with the Olympic rings gripped in its claws. Some areas of oxidation and patina throughout. The 1936 Olympics is well known but it is also worth noting that on Sep. 5 and 6, 1972, 11 members of the Israeli delegation were taken hostage by PLO terrorists and murdered. Two pieces.
