Description
An inert 88mm. shell with decorated casing once issued to a German Tiger tank. This is a 'shorter' shell casing at 57 cm. in height, designed for use in tight quarters such as in a tank or U-boat. The overall casing with projectile standing at 93 cm. in height. The projectile is marked '1637', 'DL' and 'XI 32' to the body under yellow paint, which indicates this projectile is a flak round and not normally paired with this shell casing. The flak projectile is hollow and empty, but is complete with a multi-piece fuze marked 'Zt.Z.S/30Fg.1' and 'E ccw 1944', and additionally stamped with one Waffenamt acceptance mark of an eagle over 'WaA873'. The projectile is set to the steel casing with the bottom marked: 'aty', '42', '8,8cmFlak18' and again '(8,8cm30St)', while the casing primer is marked '1941' and 'C/12hASt'. This particular shell casing has been adorned with post-war decorative paint highlighting the importance of this relic to the original souvenir hunter, most certainly the vet who picked it up. The body of the shell is painted in a burnt orange color with black highlights at the top and bottom edges, the hand-painted coat of arms for the Netherlands, and two sets of dates commemorating V-E Day and V-J Day, with the Dutch and Dutch Army motto: 'Je Maintiendrai'. An increasingly rare item to find.
