Description
JOHN BEVAN (1894–1978) British Army officer who made an important contribution to military deception, culminating in Operation Bodyguard, the plan to conceal the D-Day landings in Normandy, especially through the creation of a 'phantom' army with inflatable tanks and jeeps, recorded truck and airplane engines, etc. Good association A.L.S. 'Johnny', 1p. 8vo., London, June 15, 1953 to DENNIS WHEATLEY (1897-1977), a British writer whose prolific output of thrillers and occult novels made him one of the world's best-selling authors from the 1930s through to the 1960s. During the Second World War Wheatley was a member of the London Controlling Section, which secretly coordinated strategic military deception and cover plans and was involved in OVERLORD planning. Bevan discusses raising funds for a dinner, mentioning a sum received 'from A Force towards our dinners...Very good of Dudley and Michael', presumably referring to the annual dinner of Wartime Deception Planners. Very good.
