Description
DUSKO POPOV (1912 – 1981) Serbian double agent who served both the British MI6 and German Abwehr during World War II. He passed off disinformation to Germany as part of the Double-Cross System while working as an agent for the Yugoslav government-in-exile in London. Deceptions in which he participated included Operation Fortitude, which sought to convince German military planners that the Allied invasion of Europe would take place in Calais, not Normandy, thereby diverting hundreds of thousands of German troops and increasing the likelihood that Operation Overlord would succeed. His signed memoir: 'Spy Counter-Spy' (New York: Grosset & Dunlap), 1974. First edition, 340pp. 8vo. with dust wrapper which bears a few marginal tears and chips. Popov has boldly signed the blank page opposite the title page. Additionally, the front flyleaf bears the ownership signature and date 'Jan. 22, 1982' of ex-Texas Gov. JOHN B. CONNALLY (1917-1993), who was wounded in the same Nov. 22, 1963 shooting in Dallas that killed President John F. Kennedy. Popov, a real 'lady-killer', is said to have been the model for Ian Fleming's 'James Bond'. The book is sold with a signature on his personal letterhead of EWEN MONTAGUE (1901–1985), a British intelligence expert. He is best known for his leading role in Operation Mincemeat, a critical military deception operation that misdirected German forces' attention away from the Allied invasion of Sicily by planting a floating corpse in RAF uniform with disinformation about invasion plans.
