You can arrive at The Big House in style this Fall with this fully customized 1948 Dodge sedan along with a matching travel trailer to haul all of your tailgating supplies. This car was owned by Detroit business tycoon Richard Kughn who was also a major supporter of The University of Michigan. This ‘48 Dodge Special Sedan was customized to showcase Kughn’s love of the university and to commemorate the undefeated 1948 University of Michigan Football team. Over the years this car was present at The Big House for many home games which Kughn attended. The car and trailer have been completely customized for the maize and blue, along with an extensive mechanical sorting when the car was customized in 2000. The car was sold to Kughn by Tom Barrett who was a founding partner of Barrett-Jackson Auctions. The car came to Kughn as a California car that had aged quite gracefully in the California weather. Over the years Kughn had played with the idea of customizing a car for the University of Michigan, but it was not until the 48’ Dodge came to his collection, that he made the connection between the undefeated 1948 Wolverines and the distinctive shape of the Dodge that resembled a football helmet. The car was in fine condition when the restoration was started. The body required very little attention before painting and the chrome is original and retains a bright finish. The car was mechanically sorted and upgraded during the customization process. Mechanical items that were service at the time include:Rebuilt carburetorRebuilt brakesRebuilt master brake cylinder New radiator hosesNew Fan beltsFuel and Brake System lines inspected and replaced where necessaryElectrical inspected and repaired as neededKughn also purchased and customized a replica Mullins Red Cap trailer which features a fiberglass shell and steel frame to allow you to pull even more tailgating supplies.
