Description
A hemispherical gilt brass scaphe dial, German, circa 1600,
the hemispherical dial with spring loaded dial and marked with seven declination lines, relevant zodiac symbols and hours 6-12-6, the base plate mounted with small compass, glass cracked, surrounded by 1-12 and 1-12 scales, the outside surfaces with engraved foliate and looped design decorations,
1in x 2in x 2in (3cm x 5 1/2cm x 5 1/2cm) when closed

A similar dial signed by Markus Purmann and dated 1588 is illustrated in Encyclopedie Illustree Montres et Horloges by Radko Kyncl, and the dial is housed in the Prague Technical Museum.
Condition
Gilding to domed surface is well worn, on the inner base plate there is a mount for probably a latitude arm which is missing.
