Cole excelled at every genre of comic book art he tried his hand at, from humor to jungle to crime to suspense, but it's his horror work that really stands out. What was the secret behind his deft handling of horror motifs? One overlooked factor may be the hands-on experience carving up corpses that Cole acquired working as a coroner's assistant. According to E.B. Boatner's article on Cole in the 11th edition of the Overstreet guide, "Cole is a horror artist who assisted at autopsies," in addition to having taught aviation and studied veterinary medicine, before finding success as an "artist, editor, art director, publisher, [and] producer."______________________________________________________________
