A tomb-raider finds himself face to face with a vengeful mummy on L.B. Cole's cover. Angry mummies were among the most prevalent pre-Code motifs — perhaps mummies resonated with Cold War readers due to their unassimilable foreign-ness. According to an online theorist, the "mummy's revenge" trope hinges upon Western discomfort with the consequences of imperialism: "In tale after tale, the mummy—and, more broadly, the antique Egyptian—has indeed come to stand for a mysterious but also menacing Orient, which threatens to wreak a terrible vengeance upon those guilty of imperial transgression." — Nolwenn Corriou, "The Return of the Victorian Mummy: Alex Kurtzman's The Mummy (2017), A Modern Orientalist Tale."
