Description
North America, United States, New England / New York, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An antique steamer trunk made from wood with iron fittings along the seams, iron hinges, and a lock plate. The interior is lined with paper and a colored Victorian illustration of a woman seated on a bench is on the lid. Pictures and colored paper trim decoration was popular in Victorian era trunks to customize and beautify this luggage. The overall shape is compact, with a short rectangular body and a slightly domed lid. There are several intact waybill labels from old railroad and express services plastered on the sides. One is from Westcott Express company serving the Greater New York and New England region, another is Willis & Beal's based in Boston Massachusetts, and a partial Railway Express Agency waybill. It seems that this trunk traveled much of the Northeastern United States! Size: 20.5" L x 17" W x 19.5" H (52.1 cm x 43.2 cm x 49.5 cm)
