Description
East Asia, Taiwan / Formosa, Paiwan culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An impressive example of an ancestral house panel that is hand-carved from a single piece of wood. The rectangular slab depicts in high relief a nude male figure standing with bowed knees and hands raised. The stylized body is minimalist in form, showing sparse detail aside from delineated toes, fingers, and genitalia. His bald, ovoid head displays an evocative countenance with raised eyes, a round nose, and an open, rectangular mouth, all flanked by prominent ears. Decorated panels like this one were placed by the doors of Paiwan ancestral houses. They were carved and named for the ranking ancestors of the house. Size: 17.1" L x 1.9" W x 41.8" H (43.4 cm x 4.8 cm x 106.2 cm)
