BIOGRAPHY:
Jean-Eugene Bersier was born on June 8, 1895 in Paris. He was a painter, etcher, and art historian who was an officer of the Legion d'Honneur and Order of the Arts and Letters. He was a pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens, Emile Rene Menard and Rene Xavier Prinet. As a doctor of the University of Alger, he became a professor at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts d'Alger where he was the professor of M'Hamed Issiakhem. From 1960, Bersier became the head of the etching studio at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts where he also participated as a member of the Jury and where he was the professor of Mimi van der Merwe. In addition, Bersier participated in numerous conferences over the years at the College Estienne.Toward the end of his studies of the classics, Bersier directed himself toward painting. The studios of Jean-Paul Laurens, Maurice Denis, and Rene-X. Prevert welcomed him. Bersier exhibited at the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1921-1968in the Salon des Tuilleries from 1924, then in the Salon des Independants from 1935 and the Salon d'Automne from 1926, where he was a member of the Committee during the 1920s. At the same time, Bersier took part in the Societe de la Jeune Gravure Contempotaine and the Societe de l'Estampe.He participated in numerous exhibitions with friends Friez, Waroquier, Laprade, Brianchon, Lecaron, etc. Bersier was just as much a lecturer in conferences as he was a painter and etcher. His favorite subject was "La Gravure" or etching at the Sorbonne, Nimeque University, Amsterdam, and Haarlem where he spent time at the Institute Francais of the Netherlands to learn more about French etching.Bersier was a member of the Front Nationale des Arts during the German Occupation of France during World War II. In 1945, he published a Tribute to the Patriot Maurice Denis in the review Arts. He was also an organizer of the conference on Daumier. Bersier was a highly cultivated painter whose work achieved a successful synthesis between his love of archaic form and his fascination with contemporary means of expression.Bersier died October 23, 1978.In 2003, Bersier's work was featured in the exhibition L'Ecole D'Algers at the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux.
