Description
A fine engraved Saxon pewter tankard, Altenberg, circa 150/60Slightly conical body on three feet decorated in relief with seated ladies. Engraved all-over with flowers, on the obverse the Christogram "IHS" within a wreath of flames. Hinged lid with sturdy disc finial and plume thumbpiece. The handle decorated with a fine relief of scrolling foliage, the upper edge stamped with the Altenberg city mark and "CS" master mark (Hintze, volume 1, no. 7). The interior with calibration mark and rosette at base (double-headed eagle). Engraved on the underside the owner's name "Georg Wagner 1669". Height 23.5 cm.Condition: I - II
