Description
Piranesi, Giovanni Battista (Italian, 1720-1778), Veduta di Campo Vaccino [View of the Campo Vaccino, Roman Forum], mid to late 18th century, etching on laid paper, no watermark visible in the margins, impression 16 x 21.75 inches, full sheet 20.25 x 29.5 inches, unframed. A single plate from Vedute di Roma [Views of Rome], Piranesi's famous work, first printed in the late 1740s, showing Roman buildings, ruins and monuments, primarily marketed to European visitors on the Grand Tour. Provenance: from the collection of a retired librarian of art and architecture at Columbia University.
Condition
In good antique condition, soft vertical crease down the center, one inch torn section at lower middle has been repaired on the verso, light staining in the margins; the sheet appears to have undergone a professional reduction of discoloration at some point.
