Item Details
Description
Oberleutnant Hermann Göring – his flight log no. 5 from 10 June 1917 to 1 June 1918Detailed accounts in Göring's handwriting of a total of (tr.) "173 completed missions and 80 aerial combats. Caused 11 adversaries to crash". DIN A5 notebook with squared pages and a linen cover, this inscribed "5./V." in red indelible ink. The flight log meticulously kept, most entries in pencil with the occasional emphasis in red indelible ink, the flights numbered in blue indelible ink. The introduction and conclusion of the log recorded in ink. The frontispiece handwritten in ink "Göring, Leutnant Jagdstaffel 27. - Bordbuch Nr. 5. Begonnen. 10. Juni 1917. Beendet. 1.6.1918". The first page also written in ink (tr.) "Missions as squadron leader of Jagdstaffel 27 [.] from 10 June 1917 (previous logbooks 1.2.3.4.)", along with a list of all 12 entries per flight from "1.) Mission, 2.) Date, 3.) Consecutive flight number" right through to "12.) Remarks".On 16 July 1917, Göring scored his ninth aerial victory (tr.): "8.10 Shot down an enemy single-seater east of Ypres. Emergency landing near Terhand due to engine failure (2nd position), aircraft somersaulted and fell apart. Vzfw. Krauss also shot down a Sopwith at 8.08. - This flight was acknowledged during the group order of the day [.] on 18.7.17.". His tenth aerial victory was on 24 July 17 (tr.): "Shot down an English aircraft (Martinsyde) north of Polygon Wood. Vzfw. Krauss also shot down 1 Martinsyde". He shot down two Sopwiths, one on 5 and one on 25 August 17, his eleventh and twelfth aerial victories, scoring another four by the end of 1917 (3 and 21 September, 21 October and 7 November), and completed a total of 128 flights. After his 17th aerial victory on 21 February 18 (tr.), "2 S.E. 5 were shot down. (Oberl. Göring 1 S.E. 5, Lt. Klimke 1 S.E. 5)", "Oberl. Göring was in the military hospital from 24 February 18 to 8 March 18" and "Granted leave from 9 to 31 March 18". He achieved his 18th aerial victory on 7 April 18 (tr.) "between Hazebruck and Merville (20 km behind the front line), aerial combat with 9 single-seaters. 2 R.E. and 1 Sopwith (Oberl. Göring, Ltn. Stoltenhoff and Ltn. Brandt) were shot down, the remaining aircraft forced to land". On 3 May 18 (tr.), "Oberleutnant Göring was transferred to Jasta 20 as head of the Jagdstaffel training, from 4 - 8 May 18". On his return, Jasta 27 was commanded to A.O.K. 7 on 27 May 18 and moved to Vivaise, where Göring carried out missions nos. 164 to 173 until 1 June 1918, with no further aerial victory. The final entry in ink reads (tr.) "Completed on 1 June 1918 (previous logbooks 1.2.3.4.) - followed by logbook No. 6" and signed "Göring Obltn.". Interestingly, there is no record of Göring's promotion to Oberleutnant in August 1917. However, he has subsequently added "Oberl. Göring" to each of his previous aerial victories. Extremely rare. On 2 June 1918, just one day after finishing this log, Göring scored the 19th of his 22 aerial victories, for which he was awarded the Pour le Mérite.Condition: II +
