See Coysh and Henrywood (1982), p.259 for an explanation of this pattern which is not attributed to a particular maker. The heads in medallions forming the border are thought to represent Nelson amongst other illustrious seamen.

The base of the tureen is in good condition, save for two minute flat chips to the footrim and another minute glaze flake to one handle. There are two areas of restoration to the rim of the cover, one where the reserve for the ladle is, approximately 5cm x 3cm in size and the second smaller area only affecting the underside of the rim.
