Item Details
Description
Three Prattware jugs, circa 1800
Moulded in relief and picked out in colours, the largest with profile portraits of 'ADMIREL DUNCAN' and 'CAPTAIN TROLOP [sic]' between ships and a figure of hope, 19.4cm high, the second with a half-length portraits of 'LORD GARVIS [sic]' the banner across his legs titled to one side of the jug only, 13.2cm high, the third example with profile portraits of 'Admiral Nelson' and 'Adml Collingwood', 12.8cm high (3)
Footnotes:
A similar example to the largest, first-mentioned jug is illustrated by John and Griselda Lewis, Pratt Ware (1984), p.147, where it is attributed to one of the Scottish East Coast potteries. Captain Henry Trollope had an active role in the American Revolutionary War but is perhaps better known for his convincing a number of crews (by threatening open-fire) to return to duty during the turbulent Nore Mutiny in March and April 1797. He was also granted the Order of the Bath for his command under Admiral Duncan at Camperdown in October 1797.

The title for Collingwood inscribed in brown on the neck of the smallest jug obscures the moulded title for 'Captain Berry' underneath. Seemingly, the manufacturers felt the portraits were suitably interchangeable and it may be that after Trafalgar, they wanted to commemorate the two men, Nelson and Collingwood, who led each column in the infamous attack without having to design an updated mould.
Condition
The largest jug: overall in good condition save for a fine vertical crack approximately 4.5cm long in the rim, which stops short of the stiff leaf border at the neck. There is a fine, short horizontal crack in the rim at the tip of the spout, approximately 1cm long. There are two tiny and shallow chips to the footrim of little significance. Otherwise, the jug is in good condition, the overall typical glaze crazing having picked up some light brown stain in places. The jug is free from restoration.

The medium-sized jug (left in photo): in good condition, save for a shallow chip to one side of the spout, approximately 0.5cm wide. There are two short and very fine vertical cracks in the rim, the longest measuring 1cm. Otherwise, there are several tiny losses to glaze and areas of roughness to the spout and sharp edges of the handle and moulded high points, none of which are significant. There is typical crazing to the glaze, which has picked up some stain in places. The jug is free from restoration.

The smallest jug (right in photo): the handle has been restored, with some associated restoration to the body at the handle terminals. There is a tiny chip to the tip of the spout and a little shallow glaze loss also to the tip of the spout. There is a small area of glaze loss to the neck of the jug just below the word 'Nelson'. Otherwise, in good condition with typical minor glaze crazing.
