Description
A Derby miniature pedestal bust of Nelson, circa 1820
Modelled in military dress, Nelson's vacant sleeve affixed to his breast, carefully picked out in enamels and gold, the socle raised on a circular stepped pedestal inscribed in gold 'BORN SEP 29th 1758 / DIED OCT 21 1805', 10.7cm high, crown, crossed batons and D mark in red
Footnotes:
David Manchip illustrates a similar example alongside a related bust of George IV, see Artists & Craftsman of the 19th Century Derby China Factory (2004), p.79. Both were probably modelled by Edward Keys who was an apprentice and subsequent modeller at Derby between 1814 and 1826.
