Description
**Winchester M1D Garand Rifle Rebuilt by Springfield Armory
Korean War
.30-06. 24" barrel length. SN: 1237267. Parkerized metal finish overall mounting T105 pattern sights and set in a walnut semi-pistol grip stock with M1D pattern scope base attached to rear barrel. Long stroke piston driven gas operated semi-automatic rifle fed by internal box magazine charged by en-bloc clips. Receiver is marked U.S. RIFLE/CAL. .30 M1/WINCHESTER/TRADE MARK with the barrel showing a punch mark and two P proofs next to a barrel date marking of S-A 1-52, indicating the barrel was produced in January of 1952. Serial number indicates the rifle was originally produced in September, 1942 with the mixture of parts numbers and makers indicating it was subject to post-war refurbishment. Left stock shows SA cartouche indicating it was rebuilt at Springfield Armory, and additionally shows a circle P proof marking to the wrist. Rifle shows a post war rebuild operating rod marked D35382 SA paired with a wartime Winchester bolt showing drawing number D28287-1 W.R.A. The trigger housing and hammer both show Springfield Armory markings indicative of wartime manufacture and installed during the rifle's refurbishment. Scope base is unmarked and displays a correct rough factory finish. Item is without scope and cheek pad. Rifle shows a muzzle erosion reading of between 1 and 2, and a throat erosion reading of 2.

Originally developed as an alternative to the more elaborate M1C rifle, the M1D was tested during World War II, but did not see combat until the Korean War alongside the more numerous M1C. The en-bloc charging of the Garand rifle ensured that any adaptation had to offset the scope to facilitate loading, and both the M1C and M1D featured scopes offset to the left with a large cheek rest serving to adjust the shooter's eye into place.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
Condition
Good. Bore is Bright with some light pitting near the crown and strong rifling. Metal finish is thinning over the gas cylinder with some edgewear to the scope base and receiver, along with some pitting over the rear receiver that was filled in when the rifle was re-arsenaled. Some traces of oxidation around the sling swivel at forend. Stock shows some scattered light handling mars and dings, and a chip to the forward handguard in the operating rod channel. There is a ring to the left stock beside the receiver, along with some flaking to the finish. Rifle shows a muzzle erosion reading of between 1 and 2, and a throat erosion reading of 2.
