About the artist: Heinrich Hartung IV, also Clemens Heinrich Hartung (born June 25, 1888 in Düsseldorf, † March 28, 1966 in Koblenz) was a German landscape painter. He is the eldest son of a painter family and dynasty that has lived in Koblenz for a long time. He was named Heinrich Hartung in the fourth generation of painters. Heinrich Hartung IV is considered a subtle interpreter of Rhenish landscapes and Rhenish life.
After attending secondary school, Hartung received his first artistic training from the painter Franz Molitor. It was almost natural that Heinrich Hartung, the fourth named after his father and grandfather, embarked on a career as a painter. After completing his first training at Molitor, he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. His work was interrupted by the First World War. In 1919 he settled in Koblenz for the rest of his life. He renounced painting, like his father Heinrich Hartung III. for a long time any modernist trend. But later he no longer strictly adhered to this artistic approach. Influenced by current tendencies in art, "he developed a broad, pasty style to which he remained committed throughout his life." [1] His works speak of a love for the simplicity and harmony of the object. Hartung's pictures of his conservative phase are characterized by a light, often somewhat cool color scheme in which romantic and realistic tendencies come into play at the same time.
