Description
Dating from 1915, this exact Woggle-Bug and box appear on page 65 of "The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones". The 4 3/4" x 1 1/2" picture box is very rare, with clear illustrations of the lure and "Pat. Appl'd For" printed on the top label, otherwise unmarked, and retaining it's equally as rare fold out paper. The 2 1/2" wood bait is the extremely rare 2hk version with a fatter body, finished in yellow with red chin and complete with the twin metal spring clips in the belly slots. Appearing unfished, with only light box wear, small tail chip and small touchup next to it, shiny Ex-, the early box grading Ex-/Ex. We are unaware of another example of this model Woggle-Bug, and the box is one of scant few surviving.
From the Sheridan Jones Collection.
Referred to as "America's pioneering outdoor writer", Sheridan Jones (1881-1958) was certainly one of the most respected and prolific angling writers of his era. Many of the lures offered in this auction, where noted, were personally owned by Jones. Several were given to the esteemed author and outdoor writer for his professional opinion, others as gifts by lure makers vying for his favor. Stated best by author Joseph Hilko in his 2010 book The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones: "Jones' legacy as an educator, naturalist, professional writer and world-class angler is worthy of remembrance today".
