Description
An extraordinary package of a "Pat. applied for" box, pre-patent bait, and an extremely rare "introductory offer" paper insert, all believed to date from 1909-10. Exceptionally rare and in Ex-/Ex condition, the earliest Rotary Marvel picture box, measuring 4 1/4" x 2 3/8" and retaining its complete top label with a clear lure illustration and crisp text, interior stamped from the Sheridan R. Jones collection. Also included, and nearly as rare as the box, is a Case Bait Co. "coupon" for a discount on a Rotary Marvel Casting Bait, the 32-34 West Congress Street address on the reverse. The early 3" bait is all-nickel plated, head and body, and rigged with wire side hook hangers (rather than the later used Neverfail hardware), conforming to the illustration on the box. In near Ex condition, with only very light wear and minor tarnish, possibly never fished. The rarity of this combination cannot be overstated, a must-have for even the most advanced rotaryhead or Michigan collector. This exact package is pictured on page 64 of "The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones". The only example of an intro Rotary Marvel box to be offered at Lang's.
From the Sheridan Jones Collection.
Referred to as "America's pioneering outdoor writer", Sheridan Jones (1881-1958) was certainly one of the most respected and prolific angling writers of his era. Many of the lures offered in this auction, where noted, were personally owned by Jones. Several were given to the esteemed author and outdoor writer for his professional opinion, others as gifts by lure makers vying for his favor. Stated best by author Joseph Hilko in his 2010 book The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones: "Jones' legacy as an educator, naturalist, professional writer and world-class angler is worthy of remembrance today".
