Measuring 10" in length, this very rare glass tube was made by Lowell B. Calkin of Millville, New Jersey. Calkin, born in 1919, was a maker of custom glass for scientific purposes and novelties, producing the majority of his glass lures from 1939 into the 50's. While Calkin placed lures for sale in local shops, he also attempted to sell his unique creations from his home - needless to say, not many of these fragile items sold. Other than a few post war tubes, Calkin's initials appear on his tubes with raised applied glass lettering, this example featuring the maker's full name due to the long length of the tube, allowing the extra lettering: "Chum Mino Lowell Calkin Millville N.J.". One of only a small number (the others are floats) we are aware of with his full first and last name. With minor wear, tiny ding, surface scratches and faint hairlines, the fragile glass "ears" intact and unbroken. This important piece can easily be considered one of Calkin's rarest fishing tackle items. Only the second example of a Calkin chum tube to be offered at Lang's - the other was purchased directly from the Calkin family in the 1980's by the late author Al Munger.
