Rare first edition of voluminous explanation of the major controversial issue of Christ's presence in the Eucharist, by the French theologian Claude de Sainctes (1525-1591).
With dedications to Pope Gregory XIII and to King Henri III.
A fiery Catholic and an ardent supporter of the Catholic League, Sainctes was nominated Bishop of Evreux on account of his vehement attacks on his enemies Calvin and Beza and through the patronage of Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine (1575).
He was later condemned to death as guilty of high treason, having approved the murder of Henri III.
