Item Details
Description
Dedham pottery salt and pepper shaker lot. Four pieces in the lot. 2 round shakers with bunny top; 2 standard shakers. Shakers are in good condition with minor age and wear marks. Salt and pepper shakers with bunnies measure 3 inches tall and standard salt and pepper shakers measure 2.75 inches tall. Please review all photos for further information & description. All measurements are approximate. This item does not have the original Dedham Company markings, thus denoting that they are newer made reproductions made by either the Dedham Historic Society or The Potting Shed company. Dedham pottery is generally very well marked with the company name and/or a very easily recognized maker’s mark in the form of the famous Dedham rabbit. Some items, especially one-off artware pieces, are simply signed with the incised name Dedham Pottery in script on the base. Early pieces from the Dedham pottery are believed to feature only a rabbit motif on the stamp. A few years into production, items begin to have a blue stamp featuring a square frame with the words DEDHAM POTTERY and the Dedham rabbit inside. In 1929, the word REGISTERED was added underneath the square frame containing the words DEDHAM POTTERY and the Dedham rabbit. This mark was continually used until the company ceased production. Original Dedham Pottery was an American art pottery company opened by the Robertson Family in Dedham, Massachusetts during the American arts & crafts movement that operated between 1896 and 1943. It was known for its high-fire stoneware characterized by a controlled and very fine crackle glaze with thick cobalt border designs. The Chelsea Keramic Art Works (1872–1889) and "Chelsea Pottery U.S." (to 1895) were earlier companies of the family.
