The first naval ships commissioned by the Continental Congress were built at John Langdon's shipyard on Rising Castle Island (or Langdon's Island) by master shipbuilder Colonel James K. Hackett. One of his apprentices working on the USS "Ranger," built in 1777, was William Badger (1752-1830). Badger worked with Hackett on the USS "America" in 1782, and from 1794-1799 as a master carpenter on the USS "Crescent" and USS "Congress." In 1797 Badger acquired three acres on Rising Castle Island from his wife's family. He built a house and began shipbuilding on what would thereafter be called Badger's Island. Known as "Master Badger," he became a preeminent shipbuilder, launching more than 100 ships including naval vessels, merchant vessels and privateers. His nephew Samuel Augustus Badger (1794-1857) was also a shipbuilder but never attained the reputation of his uncle. Samuel married Apphia Maria Fernald July 19, 1817 in Kittery, York, Maine. In 1837 Frederick Fernald purchased Badger's shipyard.
