Description
Set of Three Salem, Massachusetts Queen Anne Walnut Side Chairs, 1760-80. Each rounded crest within the serpentine crest rail ending in molded scroll ears, above the vase-shaped splat pierced with a heart, the trapezoidal slip-seat raised on cabriole legs joined by a block and turned H-form stretcher and ending in pad feet, a handwritten label on the back of two of the chairs inscribed "3 Side Chairs/ Roundabout Chair/ from/ Chestnut Hill House/ Morris Gray." H: 38.5 in., W: 23.25 in., D: 20 in. Seat width: 21.375 in. This set of chairs likely belonged to William Gray (1750-1825), a wealthy merchant of Salem and Lt. Governor of Massachusetts. Then to his granddaughter Ellen Gray (1830-1921) To her nephew, Morris Gray (1856-1931), President of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1914-1924 To his daughter, Elizabeth Gray Parker (1886-1969)
