After completing his studies at the Boston Museum School, he moved to Paris in 1891 and studied at the Academie Julian. During his stay he met and was influenced by the American artist and frame-maker James Abbot McNeill Whistler. Whistler advocated that both painting and frame should be unified in color and style, while also harmonizing with the space they inhabited. When he returned to America, Murphy was disappointed in the quality of the manufactured commercial frames available for his own paintings, and decided to teach himself the craft of carving, gilding and ultimately designing his own frames. Response to his work was positive and in 1903 he and Charles Prendergast (American, 1863-1948) opened The Carrig-Rohane Shop, Inc., in Winchester, named after the Irish town of Murphy's father and meaning "Red Cliff" in Gaelic. In 1905 the shop relocated to Boston, and in 1912 the Swedish wood carver Walfred Thulin (1878-1949) joined the group. Murphy was the first American framer to sign and date the back of each frame. In 1915, Murphy asked the Boston art dealer Robert C. Vose to take over management of the shop, keeping the same name and remaining in the same location. In the late 1930s after the Depression, the cost of framing became prohibitive, and the style of the frames did not mesh with the abstract style of painting that was becoming popular. The shop was moved to Vose Galleries and eventually shut down in 1939.
