Three New York Folk Art Hooked Rugs, George Wells Ruggery, Glen Head, Long Island, New York, Mid-Twentieth Century. Comprising an oval rug depicting a mouse holding a wine glass; an oval rug depicting butterflies hovering over a pair of bunnies and fern fronds; and a rectangular rug depicting an elephant carried aloft by three balloons over a bee and flowers, each stamped "GEORGE WELLS" in black on the binding. Mouse oval: H: 17.875 in., W: 25.875 in. Bunnies oval: H: 30.75 in., W: 42 in. Elephant rectangle: H: 41.875 in., W: 22 in. Known for his excellent craftsmanship, George Wells (1906-1988) was called the "rug maker to the stars," making custom rugs for many wealthy and famous patrons in the United States.
