Peter Max (American, b. Germany 1937). "Friends Century Ladies 2010 Ver. 1 #17" mixed media with acrylic on paper, 2010. Signed at lower right. A stunning depiction of two lovely ladies donning elaborate hats by Peter Max - a mixed media composition with hand-painted acrylic throughout that is hand-signed by the artist. Delineated in Max's signature bold style with painterly brushstrokes and vibrant color juxtapositions, this piece presents the two women in profile and bust-length with bare shoulders and hats adorned by floral clusters in a myriad of colors surrounded by a ruby red border against a background rendered in shades of cool grey and royal blue with expressive painterly gestural marks and the artist's signature delineated in a rainbow of hues by the artist. Size: 11" L x 8.5" W (27.9 cm x 21.6 cm)
About the artist: Born in Berlin, Peter Max moved frequently with his family, living in more than six countries until they settled in the United States. Max studied in New York City at the Art Students League, the Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Art. Max has been revered as a visionary Pop Artist since the 1960's, beloved for his "Cosmic '60s" style which would later evolve to Neo Expressionism. Max developed a bold style of painting using striking Fauvist colors and intriguing themes. As he evolved from Pop to Neo-Expressionism, his work became more painterly and sensuous. Max's unique symbolism and vibrant color palette have continued to inspire new generations of Americans throughout the decades.
