Pre-Columbian, Mexico to Peru, likely Colima & Chancay / Chimu cultures, ca. 1000 to 1450 CE. A collection of 5 ancient shell carvings and ornaments that include Spondylus and nacre. The 2 largest are conch shells carved into abstract animals with circular eyes, similar in appearance to zoomorphs that appear in woven textiles from Chimu and Chancay cultures. The 2 small pieces are carved shell pendants / beads. Included is a complete half of a Spondylus, the surface pitted with age. It is unclear the age or location this shell came from, but it is very likely it was used by a Pre-Columbian culture as an offering and / or an item of significant value. All are displayed in a modern Riker case. Size of spondylus shell: 4.25" L x 4" W (10.8 cm x 10.2 cm); smallest bead: 1.25" L x 0.75" W (3.2 cm x 1.9 cm); case: 12.25" L x 8" W (31.1 cm x 20.3 cm)

Shells were associated with the primordial sea and the Pre-Columbian world's mythical beginnings. In addition, shells were linked to breath, wind, and moisture. Spondylus shells, also known as spiny or thorny oysters, have been revered by Andean peoples since the Pre-Columbian era. In addition to being featured in their artwork and used as currency, Spondylus pieces served as sacred offerings to Pachamama, the earth/time mother, a version of Mother Nature. The Spondylus shell carries numerous symbolic meanings. A symbol of fertility and elite social status, it was also believed to be an omen of rain, warning the indigenous of El Nino. In fact, the Spondylus shell only appears when the water becomes warmer during December - the time of the El Nino current - immediately before the rainy season.
