Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Chorotega culture, ca. 1100 to 1200 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery jar of sizable form with a spherical body displayed atop a flared foot. A pair of enormous, abstract serpentine creatures crawl across the surface with huge, gaping jaws and densely scaled bodies. Around the rim is a register of pyramidal and stepped motifs, and around the base of the foot is a series of inversely corresponding triangles. Very little is known of the Pre-Columbian Chorotega, who did not leave behind many ruins. They were roughly contemporaneous with the Maya, and, together with the Chibcha people of Colombia, formed a cultural link between the peoples of the Andes and the peoples of Mexico. Size: 8.12" Diameter x 9.2" H (20.6 cm x 23.4 cm)

Provenance: Private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000; ex-Gary Seiver collection, Carlsbad, New Mexico, USA, purchased June 18, 1981; ex-Peter Natan Gallery
