Joseph Louis Hipppolyte Bellange (French, 1800-1866). Group of Five Unframed Studies. Comprising "Guerre d' Italie, Salterino," 1857, gouache, watercolor and graphite, signed and dated "h. Bellange 1857" lower left, and inscribed in pencil on the reverse "Bellange 1857/ a M. Benjamin" and "Guerre d' Italie Salterino," (15.875 x 10. 5 inches); a drawing of a seated soldier and small profile of a head, graphite, (12.125 x 8.875 inches); a sketch of a crowd observing a buggy horse fallen in the road, gouache, charcoal and ink; a double-sided drawing of an Orientalist groom, recto with sketches of a bridle bit, breastplate and martingale, verso depicting the groom sitting on a saddle, pen and brown ink, (14.875 x 11.875 inches); and a double-sided drawing, recto a satirical sketch of a pair of Swiss Guard monkeys, verso an equestrian infantrymen, brown ink.
