Alyson Shotz (1964- ) is a cyborganic gardener who grafts photos of plant forms onto crystal-like structures that she sculpts herself. Fertilized by her dreams, the images grow within the terrain of her computer. The glistening rods, like branches after an ice storm, act as connectors linking together pictures taken from nature and her manmade crystal, giving the network of shapes the look of a complex molecular diagram. Shotz crossbreeds' nature and invention to create this deceiving species: "My homemade plants are a kind of plant life of the mind. There are not replicas of any particular genus - they are about an idea of a memory of 'plantness.' My work is always nature remembered." The natural looking world in Shotz' series "False Branches" seems simultaneously macroscopic and microscopic. Shotz acknowledges the influence of science fiction films and the collages of twentieth century surrealist Max Ernst. Shotx' work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; and the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore. From a private collection.
