Item Details
Description
A religious etching with tiny margin on paper titled "The Crucifixion: The Small Plate" (B. 80, H. 123, BB. 35-I) by Rembrandt van Rijn, 1635. Signed, Rembrandt f. Haarlem, top center. Only state, exquisite print with delicate tones. This is a monumental subject which deeply resonated with the artist. The etching depicts the dialogue between Christ and the Virgin, in which Christ enjoins his mother to treat John the Evangelist as a son. The craftsmanship and details in this etching are remarkable. The characters have diverse expressions, and the grouping of figures creates a dynamic composition. These elements were not explored to this extent in the etching medium prior to Rembrandt, which is why he has been coined as one of the greatest etchers of all time. Rembrandt was known for his religious paintings and etchings, so this provides a unique opportunity to collect a fascinating example within the artist's oeuvre. This etching is held in the permanent collections of the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam, the British Museum in London, and Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. Provenance: From a private collection. Purchased from Fingerhut Gallery, Inc. (La Jolla, CA). Gallery tag on verso and original paperwork is included in this lot. Dimensions: 3.75"h x 2.625"w (image) / 19"h x 17.5"w x 1.5"d (framed). In exceptionally good vintage condition, consistent with age. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) usually simply known as Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker, and draughtsman. Paul Getty Museum, the Gemaldegalerie, Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister, Schloss Wilhelmshohe, the National Gallery, Royal Collection, the Rijksmuseum, The Louvre, the Hermitage Museum, and Nationalmuseum, Stockholm to name a few.
