A regal portrait etching, drypoint, and burin on paper titled "Clement De Jonghe, printseller" (B. 272, H. 251, B B.51-C) by Rembrandt van Rijn, 1651. Signed and dated, Rembrandt f. 1651, bottom right corner. Early to mid-18th century impression, sixth and final state, trimmed to the platemark, with thin margins. De Jonghe was a respected and recognized member of Amsterdam society and his estate included, upon his death, a good number of plates of Rembrandt's etchings. The composition showcases the importance of the sitter with the depiction of de Jonghe's formal pose and elaborate costume making a nod to the subject's wealth. Rembrandt was known for his portrait paintings and etchings, so this provides a unique opportunity to collect a fascinating example within the artist's oeuvre. This etching is held in the permanent collections of the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam, the British Museum in London, and Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. Provenance: From a private collection. Purchased from Fingerhut Gallery, Inc. (La Jolla, CA), noted as exhibited at Galerie Kornfield, 1979, #118. Gallery tag on verso and original paperwork is included in this lot. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) usually simply known as Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker, and draughtsman. An innovative and prolific master in three media, he is generally considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art. Rembrandt's reputation as the greatest etcher in the history of the medium was established in his lifetime. Rembrandt's artworks are in the prominent museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection, the National Gallery of Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and J. Paul Getty Museum, the Gemaldegalerie, Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister, Schloss Wilhelmshohe, the National Gallery, Royal Collection, the Rijksmuseum, The Louvre, the Hermitage Museum, and Nationalmuseum, Stockholm to name a few.
