A fascinating contemporary wall hanging sculpture made of ceramic, MDF, paint & epoxy titled "Firewood" by American artist Mike Kelly, also known as Mikey Kelly. Hand signed and dated 2003 on the verso. In this installation, the artist pays homage to Wedgewood - the famed blue and white wall plaques with their classical scenes and floral arrangements, raised in white, cameo-like relief - with a contemporary twist. The artwork is constructed from an array of everyday ceramic objects. Ever playful, the artist scours greenware sources for his "bricks," objects that have cultural resonance: childhood toys or story characters, familiar holiday decorations, advertising promotional pieces. Kelly buys them - sometimes by the box load - in an unfired state called greenware and later bisque-fires them. The pieces, although not porcelain, are then glazed by hand and re-fired to a shimmering white, porcelain-like finish. This artwork is a savvy nod to modernism and the Cubist's fragmented space, another meshing of so-called High and Low. Kelly (1972- ) exhibits regularly, including shows at Slate Contemporary, Chandra Cerrito Contemporary, Art Market (San Francisco, CA), Miami Project, Franklin Parrasch Gallery (New York, NY), Cranbrook Art Museum (Bloomfield Hills, MI), Crocker Kingsley Museum (Sacramento, CA), Startup Art Fair (San Francisco and Los Angeles, CA), Kala Gallery (Berkeley, CA), Berkeley Art Center (Berkeley, CA), and Bedford Gallery (Walnut Creek, CA).
