Description
A dynamic abstract sugarlift aquatint etching on paper titled "Two-Dimensional Print of Casual Post" by American artist Chris Johanson. Hand signed in ink on the bottom right with a 2002 date and annotation of 8/25. Blind stamp from the publisher. Johanson (1968- ) is a self-trained artist who found his voice in graffiti and skateboard culture, and has maintained a studied, awkward, childlike style in his installations and works on paper. Figures are flat and disproportional, with elongated limbs and summary features. They are colored in vivid, solid hues, with subtlety of shading to indicate three dimensionality. Johanson's unsophisticated rendering is part of the strategy adopted by a group of San Francisco artists recently dubbed "The Mission School" whose ostensibly naive approach accessible art style communicates as easily to street kids as to sophisticated museum goers. Johanson had his first one-person show in 1990 in San Francisco, and by 2003 had won the coveted SECA award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He was included in the prestigious 2002 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. From a private collection. Dimensions: 31.25"h x 26.25"w x 1.75"d (framed). In excellent condition.
