An elegant modern buffet cabinet designed by for the Calvin Group by Calvin Furniture. Retains the original "Calvin Grand Rapids / The Calvin Group designed by Paul McCobb" label in drawer. An early design, possibly a prototype for the Irwin Group. Circa 1954. Bifold doors with a storage compartment and drawers. Mahogony wood veneer with saffron stain. Travertine top with inlaid brass edges and legs. This design was only in production for a brief period which makes this cabinet a unique item for modern furniture collectors. McCobb's work can be found in public museum collections, including at Brooklyn Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Provenance: From the personal collection of designer Ralph Rye - a multi-talented visionary with a career in city planning, architecture, interior design, lighting, and furniture design. He acquired this cabinet in Grand Rapids, MI. Rye has collaborated with some of the finest furniture companies in America including Dunbar, Nessen, Thonet, Jens Risom, and Baker.
