A classic modern design - the "7770 Night Table" designed by Paul McCobb for Calvin Furniture Co. Retains the original "Calvin Grand Rapids / Furniture Designs by Paul McCobb" label in drawer. An early design, possibly a prototype for the Irwin Group. Circa 1954. Mahogony wood veneer with saffron stain. Single drawer and storage compartment, wood top, inlaid brass edge and stylized brushed chrome pulls. This design was only in production for a brief period which makes this night table a unique item for modern furniture collectors. McCobb's work can be found in public museum collections, including at Brooklyn Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Provenance: This chair is from the personal collection of designer Ralph Rye who acquired it directly from the Calvin Furniture Co. in Grand Rapids when the Imperial Factory building factory closed. Ralph Rye is a multi-talented visionary with a career in city planning, architecture, interior design, lighting, and furniture design. Rye has collaborated with some of the finest furniture companies in America including Dunbar, Nessen, Thonet, Jens Risom, and Baker.
