Anacoana and her brother were cacique lords of the Haitian Taino tribe. Typical of the Taino, Anacoana and her brother painted themselves in a red paint made from the roucou fruit. Colonizers referred to them as 'red Indians,' a slur that has endured. The painting depicts this first meeting where Anacoana and her brother received Christopher Columbus and mistakenly considered him a friend. The betrayal to come is foreshadowed by the hidden colonizers and lances pointing at them. Upon Columbus' second visit he captured brother and sister and had them burned.
