Delve into the world of maritime exploration with this captivating 1756 view of the entrance to Acapulco, Mexico. Created by the English pirate G. Anson, this illustration showcases the entrance to the bustling port of Acapulco. The view prominently features Anson's renowned flagship, the Centurion, adding an intriguing historical dimension to the scene. Anson's account, titled "A Voyage Round the World" stands as one of the greatest firsthand chronicles of global voyages, adventure, and piracy from the age of exploration. Published in London in 1756, this edition takes readers on a perilous journey as Anson and his crew embark on their mission to attack Spanish territories in western South America and plunder Spanish treasure galleons. Their audacious exploits carried significant risks, including the possibility of capture, conviction for piracy, and execution by the Spanish authorities. Beginning their voyage in 1740, Anson's squadron faced numerous challenges and tribulations, resulting in the loss of over two-thirds of their crew and three of their eight ships. However, their unwavering determination drove them forward, and in 1744, with just 125 men remaining, they achieved a momentous circumnavigation of the globe aboard the Centurion. Anson's relentless pursuit of victory bore fruit when his crew captured the formidable Spanish treasure galleon, 'Nuestra Señora de Cobadonga' in 1743 off Cape Espiritu Santo on Samar Island in the Philippines. This remarkable achievement elevated Anson to the prestigious rank of Lord in the British crown and solidified his reputation as one of the foremost English commanders during the Seven Years' War. Preserved in excellent condition, this copperplate engraved view measures 21 1/2" x 11" and guarantees authenticity.
