Description
Tony Bennett (American, 1926-2023) watercolor on paper painting of Charlie Chaplin, as the Tramp, and Paulette Goddard walking off into their unknown but hopeful future from the poignant final scene of "Modern Times" (Charles Chaplin Productions, 1936). Signed with a Tony Bennett chop mark lower right, mounted and framed.
Chaplin composed the score for the film, and his romance theme, that accompanies the final scene, heightens the emotional impact of The Tramp and his girl walking off into the sunset. The music was later set to lyrics to become the popular standard "Smile," which was first recorded by Nat King Cole. Bennett recorded his own version of the song with Barbra Streisand for his 2006 "Duets: An American Classic" album.
