Portrait of a child as Diana:
The canvas has been relined and the varnish is a little dirty and scuffed. The paint surface is a little uneven in some of the brown tones of the background. Discoloured restoration is visible to the naked eye in the trunk of the tree, particularly to the right of the figure, to the figure's shoulder, and to the foliage, lower left.
Inspection under ultra-violet light is hindered by the uneven varnish but it is possible to see: strengthening to the foliage, upper right and lower left; restorations to the tree-trunk, particularly to the left of the figure; restoration to the contours of the figure's leg, lower left; and strengthening to the hair and feathers. Further restoration cannot be excluded.


Portrait of a child with a dog:
The canvas has been relined and there are 3 small patches on the reverse, upper left when looking at the back of the picture. The varnish is dirty and scuffed. Throughout the composition the brown tones are worn. Discoloured restorations are visible to the naked eye along the lower edge of the canvas. There is a horizontal scratch between the legs of the child, as can be seen in the photograph.
Inspection under ultra-violet light is difficult as the varnish is very uneven but it is possible to see: restoration and retouching to much of the tree and foliage in the background; a little strengthening to the dog; restoration to much of the figure's neck; strengthening to the feathers; retouching to the background; three small restored repairs (corresponding to the patches), upper right; and further restorations and strengthenings throughout. Further restoration cannot be excluded.
