The canvas has been relined. The varnish is dirty and scuffed. There are abrasions and a corresponding band of restoration to much of the canvas edge, presumably where the frame has rubbed. The paint surface is thin, particularly to the darker tones, and there are scattered losses throughout. There is a line of infilling to the background, upper left, where the frame has exerted some pressure. There is discoloured infilling and retouching to the background, including to old losses. It is possible to see retouching to the figure's wig, and restoration to the skin tones, particularly the forehead and cheeks. There is a little retouching and infilling to the costume and furniture, particularly to the shadow tones.
Inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by a reflective varnish, but it is possible to see: some infilling to the canvas edges; the aforementioned line of restoration to the background, upper left; some restoration to scattered losses to the background; retouching to the wig; the aforementioned restoration to the face; some retouching and small areas of restoration to the costume and furniture.
